What is Hatha Yoga?
In Western society, yoga has become synonymous with Hatha Yoga, which involves the more physical aspects of yoga: Asanas ( postures), Pranayama ( breathing exercises), Kryias (cleansing practices), are examples. The word Hatha is composed of two sanskrit words: Ha - meaning sun and Tha- meaning moon. Therefore, hatha yoga means literally to unite the sun and the moon. Hatha yoga brings together and balances opposing energies in the mind and body. The sun, or right side is associated with activity, masculinity and pingala nadi. The moon, or left side is associated with passivity, femininity, and id nadi.
It's important to note that yoga transcends physical exercise and kinesthetic's. Hatha yoga works to harmonize and transform the whole being; physically, emotionally, mentally and intellectually to bring about balance on all levels.
